This forum, euphemistically named "Freethought", is for the discussion of science & religion ... as a hardline atheist I believe that science is the way to explaining our origins in every sense and whilst I accept that science may never fully explain everything nothing about that realisation means that religion can.
I am not ashamed to admit I am a Techno Geek, I love gadgets, I love computers and 18 years ago I made the move from the biological sciences to computing. What I would like most as a career would be to work as a computer specialist for a science research team.
I love to be entertained, I prefer science fiction and the supernatural but action adventure will do and I'm still a sucker for a good comedy romance. In my opinion the best (and by best I mean most entertaining) film of all time is Star Wars. My favourite series is either Buffy The Vampire Slayer or Babylon 5 (not sure which) but the new Battlestar Galactica is up there and may trump them both yet. I have around 250 DVD's (obviously including those just mentioned). Other superb series include 24 and the West Wing.
VGA Planets is a strategic game of galactic domination that takes a little more than many current games to play i.e. a brain. The reason is that to win takes forethought, planning, strategies, alliances, honour (or lack of) and the ability to smash up to 10 other people into the ground. It lacks the sophisticated sound and interface of virtually all games but if you like D&D, war-gaming or similar style gaming and you like a science fiction setting then this game may be for you ... but be warned, whilst it hasn't got the interface other games has you play against real people and winning (or wanting to) can be highly addictive.
Music rocks ... for me literally. Over 30 years ago my oldest brother was a suedehead (a very cool Northern Soul dancer boy), from him I learned to love soul music. Over many years I followed my interests through Stax & Motown, 70's disco, funk, jazz funk, 80's dance and so on ... with a late 70's, early 80's deviation into Punk I pretty much stuck to soul. Maybe I'm just old but dance music seemed to mean something then but increasingly through the 90's and now in the 21st century it means nothing to me ... it seems to be remixed, sampled, electronic crap, every song has its obligatory rap section and I found myself looking elsewhere for inspiration. I found it in the latest incarnation of metal (called Nu-metal by its aficionado's, mallcore by those who hate it) and now I focus on bands such as the Lostprophets, Hoobastank, Filter, Killswitch Engage, KoRn and others. Maybe they and some of their parallel punk cousins (also good) are derivative, I don't greatly care, I think they're great fun.
I'm not big on sport, my brothers all are (or used to be), I'll watch major international football matches, Wimbledon and some of the Olympics. Recently, however, my daughters and I became interested in the martial arts, specifically a defensive form called Kojindo. I have found this motivates me in many ways towards a healthier life style, I drink a lot more water now, I'm cutting down on food and doing more exercise with the net effect that I am losing weight (nearly 3 quarter stone in the past month) ... that's got to be good. Anyway this forum is to discuss sport in any way anyone sees fit and also life style, health & fitness stuff!
